If you drive the 110, you already know it's different. The Arroyo Seco Parkway opened in 1940 as the first freeway in the western United States. Several entrance ramps still have stop signs and no acceleration lane, so you merge into 55 mph traffic from a dead stop.

That's where a small problem gets serious. A misfire, a lazy transmission shift or a hesitation you'd never notice on Mission Street can leave you short of power at exactly the wrong moment. If your car stumbles when you floor it, or the check engine light is flashing, get it looked at before your next merge.

Surface streets have their own issue. The 710 was never finished through town, and the state formally dropped the gap in 2024. Traffic headed to and from the 710's end in Alhambra still runs up Fremont Avenue and Fair Oaks. That means a lot of stop-and-go for a short drive, which wears brakes and transmission fluid faster than people expect.

My car hesitates when I merge onto the 110. Is it serious?

It can be. A hesitation under hard acceleration usually points to ignition, fuel delivery or the transmission. On the turbocharged engines in most newer German cars, a boost leak is another common cause. On a ramp with a stop sign you need full power right away, so we read the stored codes and live engine data to find the cause before recommending any parts.

What's the difference between a STAR station and a regular smog shop?

Some DMV renewal notices require the test at a STAR station. STAR stations meet stricter performance standards set by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. We're STAR Certified, so we can test those vehicles.

Can CAP help pay for smog repairs?

It can, if you qualify. The Consumer Assistance Program is run by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. It offers help with emissions repairs, or payment to retire a car that failed its smog check. As a CAP station, we can do the eligible repairs and handle the program paperwork with you.
