Kia maintenance reminder system explained — what "Service Required" means and the full schedule

Kia's service reminder is a mileage and time counter with normal and severe schedules. Here's the full breakdown of what's due at each interval for every Kia model.

Your Kia just told you "Service Required" on the dash. Maybe there's a wrench icon, maybe a countdown of days until your next appointment. Either way, the car wants you to bring it in. But for what, exactly?

This post is part of our complete guide to vehicle maintenance systems, covering every major manufacturer sold in the US.

Kia's maintenance system works the same way Hyundai's does (they're sister companies under the same parent). It's a mileage and time-based reminder. The car tracks distance driven and calendar days since the last reset, and when it hits the threshold, the message appears. No engine data analysis, no oil quality monitoring. Just a counter.

That means the reminder tells you when it's time, but not what's due. The "what" comes from the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, which lays out specific service items at specific mileage intervals.

How the Kia service reminder works

The system triggers a "Service Required" or "Service Due" message on the instrument cluster when you hit the preset mileage or time interval since the last reset. Factory defaults vary by model but are typically set to 7,500 or 8,000 miles and 12 months.

You can adjust the interval through the infotainment settings menu, usually under Setup, then Vehicle, then Cluster or Convenience. Some Kia owners have reported their dealer setting the reminder interval shorter than what the owner's manual recommends. Worth checking and adjusting if that's the case.

The system doesn't know what oil you use, how you drive, or whether it's 40 degrees or 110 degrees outside. It counts miles and days. If the severe maintenance schedule applies to you (and for most people in Southern California doing mixed city/highway driving, it does), you may want to service sooner than the normal schedule suggests.

After service, the reminder needs to be manually reset through the dashboard controls or by your shop using diagnostic tools.

Kia's maintenance schedule

Like Hyundai, Kia publishes two schedules: Normal and Severe.

Normal conditions: Mostly highway driving, moderate temperatures, no towing, no frequent short trips.

Severe conditions: Short trips, stop-and-go traffic, dusty or rough roads, extreme heat or cold, frequent towing, mountainous terrain.

Normal schedule

IntervalServices
Every 7,500 miles or 12 monthsOil and filter change, tire rotation
Every 15,000 milesAbove + inspect brake pads/rotors, inspect air filter
Every 30,000 milesAbove + replace engine air filter, replace cabin air filter (A/C filter), inspect drive belt, inspect brake lines, inspect fuel lines and connections
Every 60,000 milesAbove + replace spark plugs (some engines), inspect coolant, inspect automatic transmission fluid
Every 100,000 milesAbove + replace spark plugs (if not at 60K), replace coolant, replace drive belt
Every 120,000 milesReplace timing belt (if equipped)

Severe schedule

IntervalServices
Every 3,750 miles or 6 monthsOil and filter change, tire rotation
Every 7,500 milesAbove + inspect brake pads, inspect air filter
Every 15,000 milesAbove + replace engine air filter, replace cabin air filter, inspect drive belt
Every 30,000 milesAbove + replace transmission fluid, inspect fuel system, replace brake fluid
Every 60,000 milesAbove + replace spark plugs, replace coolant

Model-specific notes

Telluride and Carnival: Family haulers that often carry full loads. If you're running the AC hard in summer with a car full of kids and gear, the severe schedule applies.

Sorento and Sportage: Popular SUVs for mixed use. AWD models have additional differential fluid to maintain on their own schedule, typically every 30,000-60,000 miles.

K5 (Optima) and Forte: Commuter sedans. Highway commuters can follow normal schedule; city drivers should follow severe.

Soul and Seltos: Smaller engines that work harder in traffic. Air filter replacement may need to happen sooner in dusty conditions.

EV6 and EV9 (electric): No engine oil to change. Maintenance focuses on tire rotation, brake fluid, cabin filter, and battery coolant. The service reminder still functions on mileage/time for these items.

Stinger: The 3.3L twin-turbo V6 has its own oil and fluid specifications. Follow the manual for this engine specifically, as turbo engines put more thermal stress on oil.

FAQ

What does "Service Required" mean on a Kia? It means the vehicle has reached its mileage or time threshold for scheduled maintenance. It's a routine reminder, not a warning of a problem. Check your owner's manual to see what specific services are due at your current mileage.

Does the Kia service reminder track oil quality? No. It's a mileage and time counter. It doesn't analyze engine operating conditions or oil degradation. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual for what's due, and consider the severe schedule if you do a lot of city driving, short trips, or driving in extreme temperatures.

How often does a Kia need an oil change? Under normal conditions: every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Under severe conditions: every 3,750 miles or 6 months. Most Kia models use synthetic oil.

Why is my Kia saying service is due when I just had it serviced? The reminder wasn't reset after your last service. This is a common issue. You can reset it through the Settings menu on your infotainment or cluster display, or bring it back and ask the shop to reset it. Also check that the interval is set correctly, as some dealers set shorter intervals than what the manual recommends.

Do Kia EVs need maintenance? Yes. EVs skip oil changes but still need tire rotation, brake fluid replacement (every 2-4 years), cabin air filter replacement, and battery coolant service.

What's the difference between Kia's normal and severe schedule? The severe schedule cuts most intervals in half. Oil changes go from 7,500 to 3,750 miles, and items like transmission fluid and brake fluid get added earlier. If any of your regular driving involves short trips, city traffic, hot weather, or towing, the severe schedule applies.

Is Kia's maintenance the same as Hyundai's? Very similar. Both companies are under the same parent (Hyundai Motor Group) and share many platforms, engines, and maintenance approaches. The schedules are nearly identical, and the reminder systems work the same way.
